My great-grandmother, Jetske Gerbens Stilma , in Frisian costume

Ellwood Shores (behind our house)

Monarch butterflies at Ellwood Beach
(in a eucalyptus grove behind our house is an aggregation site for Monarchs.  The butterflies come here from around the end of October through the end of February.  They then leave to parts unknown--presumably, somewhere in California, or perhaps also Oregon or Washington.  Their grandchildren or greatgrandchildren will be back next year).

My very cute nephew, Mark (Meije) , son of brother Ben and his wife Jeanine

Kayaking at Santa Rosa Island , 2001.   The trees in the background are Torrey Pines, which grow only on Santa Rosa Island and the Torrey Pines reserve north of San Diego.

Another cute nephew and niece (Luke and Sarah) in our back yard.

Are cows really happier in Californa?  Judge for yourself!

Here I am playing St Nicolas (Dutch: Sinter Klaas), who arrives on the 5th of December in the Netherlands and hands out gifts to children.  The Dutch colonists took Sinter Klaas with them to New Amsterdam (later New York), and he eventually was twisted into Santa Claus.
